1. Finished in 1851, North Hall was the first building on the UW-Madison campus to be built. For four years, it was the complete University -- including a domitory, museum, classrooms, dining hall and library, all within four floors. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It now houses the political science department. 

 

2. 17 Nobel Prizes and 30 Pulitzer Prizes have been award to UW faculty or alumni. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And the Dalai Lama has visited us 9 times. 

 

3. In the 1890's, the UW-Madison football team began using a live badger as a mascot. Unfortunately, after not being the most cooperative, the badger had to be retired to the Madison Zoo. A new mascot was drawn in 1940, marking Bucky's birthday as October 2, 1940.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It wasn't until the 1949 homecoming game when a student wore a badger outfit with a papier mâché head that Buckingham U. Badger finally came to life. 

 

 

4. Being over 100 years old, Ag Hall also brings some history to our campus and is officially on the National Register of Historic Places. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The best part of having a class in modern day Ag Hall? Babcock Dairy Store is a hop away. I suggest trying one icecream flavor pre-exam and trying another post-exam. 

 

5. Madison, WI has the most restaurants per capita of any U.S. city (New York is over-rated).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And these go far beyond the cheese, brats & beer stereotypes.

 

 

6. 1863 was the first year women were admitted to UW-Madison...14 years after the first class was held at UW-Madison.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

They were missing out. 

 

7. The Wisconsin School of Business was founded in 1900 and although unknown to most of its current students, it was originally located inside Ingraham Hall before "Grainger High" opened in 1992

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Did I mention that UW-Madison is neck-and-neck with Harvard for having the most Fortune 500 CEO's with an undergraduate degree.

 

 

8. The original UW marching Band, beginning around 1885, was composed of only 11 musicians. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now every football Saturday we watch 224 march at Camp Randall.

 

9. In 1973, the assistant attorney gerneral suggested we forget about Bucky and replace him with "Henrietta Holstein," a lovable and productive cow.
